Shepherd's Theme

An old folk melody, representing the ancient music of creation. It's the Great Shepherd playing, the Dancer listens and dances. But a dissonant sound rises and seduces her heart.

The lights glittered and flashed, the music crashed and pealed. Welcome to the Carnival City. You can dance with death, lose your breath.

She was happy and famous for years. Or was it only a few moments?

The Photograph

Spotlight dims to shadow, applause fades like an old photograph.

A Distant Music (narrative)

A distant music hovers in the wind. She can't hear it, yet her heart is stirred deeper than her knowing.

I Remember / Why Did You Go?

A voice calls through the shadows, but she hears only the wind blowing.

Carnival City (narrative)

Where the sky is bright with a counterfeit light.

Evening Falls

Broken hearts dance broken dreams and one more dancer, used and forgotten, walks the dark avenue.

Ballerina

She dreams she's a dancer again.

Fantasy (narrative)

Fantasy like fog enwraps her soul.

Bound in Paradise

She descends to the deeps of the Carnival City yet there is One who descends with her.

Night Into Morning (narrative)

Her life pours out like ashes.

Dying Fire

Fallen so far, she can scarcely remember who she is or where she had begun as she sings to the shadows.

The Call

But one night was different. Is it the wind blowing, or is it footsteps? Now a voice, vaguely familiar, calls to her, "Lady, chosen lady."

A Thousand Voices (narrative)

But a thousand voices hiss from the shadows.

Beloved

Again the voice calls, "You are my precious Beloved." Now she knows whose voice it is.

The Shepherd (narrative)

The Shepherd steps into the dim light of the street lamp and she looks up into the strongest, most compassionate face she had ever seen. "Rise, Lady, you are free to leave."

The Year of Jubilee

The Shepherd had pursued her, called to her, purchased her freedom.

Through the Gates (narrative)

Now following the Shepherd, she bursts through the gates of the Carnival City, into the countryside.

Morning / I Want to Follow

How suddenly full of beauty all creation seemed to be as though she could see with the eyes of a child.

Spotless Robe (narrative)

Her robe appeared spotless, in fact, altogether new.

Wash Me

Set free from from the Carnival City, but she carries a slave's carnival in her heart. She prays to the Shepherd, "Wash me."

My Soul

The life of the Shepherd washes through her with water as alive as light and she sings her thanks.

Refugee

Refugee no more, now she hears a voice calling, "Come away with me my Beloved."

Come and Drink

As the Chosen Lady thanks the unseen Shepherd and drinks His living water, she can hear Him calling to all the thirsty dancers.

Come Into the Feast

As she drinks, she begins to yearn with the Shepherd's passion, begins to sing as He sings.

My Shepherd (narrative)

"I want others to drink of this water," she says.  "Take the water to them," He answers.

Filling of the Cup

The life of the Shepherd rises in her like a river.

Overflowing (narrative)

The Shepherd, though unseen, turns back toward the Carnival City and she walks with Him.

What Will You Do / There Is One

He calls to all the thirsty dancers and she becomes His voice. 

She Called (narrative)

A few come out of the city and join her dance.

Walk on Through

She tries to pull down the walls and gates of the Carnival City.

The Stranger (narrative)

But the city is too strong.  Those who had joined her fall asleep; even the unseen Shepherd is silent.  Now, the Stranger appears.

Choose Your Doorway

"Would the Lady care to join me?  Choose your doorway and return."

Stumbling (narrative)

Lonely and tempted, she recognizes the Stranger.

Psalm 23

She sings her faith and the Stranger trembles.

As She Sang

As she sings her faith, the river of the Shepherd rises in her once again.

Have You Heard About My Shepherd?

Her song of faith causes the Stranger and his clowns to trample one another in retreat.

As She Sang, 2 (narrative)

Now she can hear again the voice of the Shepherd.

I Am the Good Shepherd

Listening to the His song, she can hear Him praying.

Make Us One

She sings the Shepherd's prayer.

Holy, Holy, Holy

The people begin to awaken; they join her dance.

Rise Up O God

Now they dance with one heart and one voice.

As She Sang, 3 (narrative)

She realizes that the walls and gates of the Carnival City are in the hearts of the captive dancers.  Only mercy will set them free.

Rise Up in Me

She invites the Shepherd to release His mercy through her.

Gates Began to Open (narrative)

Now gates begin to open, now walls begin to crumble.

Jubilation Suite

The Chosen Lady walks the streets of the city, calling to lost dancers.

Where is the Lady? (narrative)

In pouring out her life, she discovers who she really is - the Shepherd's Beloved, His Bride.
